Hideki Matsuyama commits to 3M Open

12 July 2023

The 3M Open picked up a big commit, with international star Hideki Matsuyama committing to Minnesota’s PGA Tour stop.

The Japanese standout won the Masters in 2021 and is considered one of the bigger names on the tour. He joins the likes of 2022 3M Open champion Tony Finau and Sungjae Im as premiere players committed to play at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine at the end of the month.

Matsuyama is currently ranked 31st in the Official World Golf Rankings, but the 31-year-old is just 55th in the current FedEx Cup standings. Players finishing in the top 70 of the season-long standings qualify for the playoffs. Those who are in the top 50 after the first playoff event not only qualify for the BMW Championship — the second playoff event — but they also lock in their spots in next year’s lucrative elevated events.

Matsuyama is likely attempting to secure his spot inside that top 50. Matsuyama played in the inaugural 3M Open, where he finished in a tie for seventh after firing a first-round 64. He teed it up again in Blaine last season, only to withdraw after shooting a first-round 77.
