The legendary teams from the 1960s and 1970s will forever live in Vikings lore as the ones that laid the foundation for a franchise that has long been among the most consistent in the NFL. Fittingly, the Vikings will pay homage to that era by wearing classic uniforms in the Sept. 10 season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The unveiling of the classic uniforms came on Tuesday in a virtual event with season-ticket holders that featured hall of fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton, who led the Vikings during perhaps the franchise’s most successful years, as well as current fullback C.J. Ham.
There was also a widespread rollout on social media, with the Vikings dropping a number of hype videos for the occasion.

The look of the classic uniform is nearly identical to the outfit the Vikings wore in the 1960s and 1970s. The jersey features a deeper purple hue, traditional lettering and numbering, gold trim accents, and gold and white sleeve stripes. The pants are white with a gold stripe flanked by purple stripes. The helmet will depicts the vintage Vikings horn to go along with a gray facemask.
There has been heaping praise from fans on social media since the Vikings unveiled their classic uniform. A number of players have also chimed in, with receiver K.J. Osborn quote tweeting with a string of heart eyes emojis and safety Josh Metellus quote tweeting with a fire emoji.
Anyone who wants to purchase a replica of the classic uniform can do so online through Fanatics, or at Vikings Locker Room stores across the state. You can visit the Minnesota Vikings Museum in Eagan to see the complete uniform and to learn more about the history of team gear, uniform designs, and the origin of the horns on the helmets.
In addition to the Vikings wearing the classic uniform in the season opener against the Buccaneers, they also will have the option to wear the classic uniform each season moving forward. No word yet on whether the Buccaneers will match the vibe on Sept. 10 with their classic uniforms with the iconic creamsicle color scheme.
