Business People: Eagan’s Hoyt Hsiao to chair MEDA business development organization

Hoyt Hsiao

The Metropolitan Economic Development Association, Minneapolis, announced the appointment of Hoyt Hsiao as chair of its board of directors. Hsiao was MEDA’s 2015 Entrepreneur of the Year; he is president and CEO of Shaw-Lundquist Associates Inc., a construction company in Eagan. MEDA provides business support services to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) entrepreneurs.

EDUCATION

Kenneth Janz has been named interim president of Winona State University by the Minnesota Colleges and Universities board of trustees, succeeding Scott Olson, who last month was named chancellor of the Minnesota State system. Janz previously was associate vice president for academic affairs and CIO.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

Hiway Credit Union, St. Paul, announced that mortgage loan officer Kathy Glashan was named to National Mortgage Professional Magazine‘s Leading Loan Originators list.

GOVERNMENT

The Minnesota Department of Health announced the retirement of Deputy Commissioner Margaret Kelly. Her career spanned four decades of public service to the state and City of St. Paul. The department also announced the appointment of Maria Sarabia as assistant commissioner for the health improvement bureau. Sarabia previously served as director of aging and disability services for Ramsey County’s Home and Community Based Services … Ramsey County announced that Patrick Chapman has been named director of the County Assessor department; Chapman has served as county assessor since November 2022 and interim director of the department since August 2022.

HONORS

Land O’Lakes, Arden Hills, announced that Time magazine has named it to its third-annual TIME100 Most Influential Companies list. Land O’Lakes is a dairy cooperative and producer of national retail branded dairy products.

LAW

Chestnut Cambronne, Minneapolis, announced it has advanced Christopher Vatsaas to income partner. Vatsaas leads the firm’s Family Law Practice Group and is an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.

MANUFACTURING

Malco Products, an Annandale, Minn.-based maker of professional hand tools for workers in the HVAC, construction and automotive trades, announced that CEO Rich Benninghoff has joined the board of directors.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

Medtronic, an international developer of implantable medical electronic devices and treatments, announced it appointed Greg Lewis to its board of directors. Lewis serves in two executive roles at Honeywell. Medtronic is based in Ireland with executive offices in Fridley. … Predictive Oncology, an Eagan-based developer of AI-influenced cancer treatments, announced the appointment of Andrew Einhorn to its business advisory board. Einhorn works for Danforth Advisors, a business consultant for the life sciences industry.

NONPROFITS

The Hormel Foundation, Austin, Minn., announced Bonnie Besse Rietz as acting chair and Roland (Rollie) Gentzler as vice chair. Rietz is a former mayor of Austin; Gentzler was vice president finance and treasurer for Hormel Foods Corp. The Hormel Foundation is the charitable arm of Hormel Foods, an Austin-based national producer of retail branded food products. … Minneapolis-based law firm Fredrikson announced that shareholder Masha Yevzelman has been appointed to the Jewish Family Services of St. Paul board of directors. … Community Reinvestment Fund, USA, a Minneapolis-based national community financing organization, announced it has named Alexis Dishman small business chief lending officer. Most recently, Dishman served as the women’s entrepreneur initiative chief lending officer at Michigan Women Forward.

ORGANIZATIONS

Jodi Laliberte announced that she has been named president elect of the Shoreview/Arden Hills Lions Club. Laliberte is a charter member of the organization since 2017.

RETAIL

J.H. & Sons, a family-owned menswear retailer, announced the planned opening this fall of a location at Galleria Edina. J.H. & Sons is a legacy company of Jim Halberstadt, who opened Halberstadt’s Men’s Clothiers in St. Cloud in 1975.
