August offers two blue moons and a super moon offer for stargazers

31 July 2023

Not all full moons are the created equal.

And with two full moons in August, it’s no surprise that the astrological events aren’t quite the same.

The first full moon will be Aug. 1.

A monthly blue moon, coming 29.5 days later, will be a super blue moon, earning its namesake by taking place when the moon is near its closest approach to Earth appearing bigger and brighter than a regular full moon. The super blue moon can appear 16% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon.

For stargazers looking to the sky and curious about catching another unique event: a super new moon on April 8, 2024, is expected to garner worldwide attention as it passes in front of the sun to create a total solar eclipse.
