The Yankees won their second consecutive game after getting brilliant pitching performances and some solo homers from a few Pinstripers at Comerica Park on Tuesday evening.
The contributions led to a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers to even the four-game set.
Gleyber Torres supplied the offense early in the first inning by hitting a 454-foot shot to left field, the longest home run of his career. The lead provided a cushion for Michael King, who got the start for the Yankees. The righty cruised in his second start of the season. He pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits, no walks and striking out five batters over 61 pitches. The outing lowered his ERA to 2.96.
Jhony Brito took over in the fifth and kept the game scoreless. The 25-year-old allowed two hits, two walks and struck out three batters in 3.1 innings of work. The effort secured the righty his fifth win of the season.
Kyle Higashioka provided an insurance run in the fifth with a home run to left field, which extended the lead to 2-0. With the bases loaded in the sixth, Aaron Judge scored on a past ball that went by Tigers catcher Carson Kelly. The run wasn’t charged to starter Tarik Skubal, but he eventually was handed his third loss of the season. The left-hander allowed two earned runs, four hits, two walks and struck out nine batters in six innings of work.
Right-handers Will West and Garrett Hill eventually followed Skubal in relief. Hill gave up Anthony Volpe’s 19th home run of the season in the ninth, which extended the lead to 4-0.
Relievers Wandy Peralta and Clay Holmes recorded the final five outs of the game to give the Yankees their 64th win of the season. Holmes, though, spoiled the shutout after after giving up a single to Tigers outfielder Parker Meadows that scored two runs.
The win capped an eventful day for the franchise that included multiple roster moves. Before Tuesday’s win, the team announced they released three-time All-Star Josh Donaldson. The move puts an end to disastrous tenure for the third baseman in the Bronx.
In other news, the Yankees reportedly waived Harrison Bader. However, Bader was in the lineup on Tuesday. The struggling outfielder went 0-for-4 at the plate.
