National Iron Co., one of Duluth’s oldest heavy industries, is going out of business next month, company officials announced yesterday. The final 45 employees will lose their jobs on Oct. 28 when the firm at 50th Avenue West and Ramsey Street closes. Declining activity in transportation, manufacturing, and finance led the Duluth Business Index for July into a continued summer slump. The July index, released yesterday, reports overall economic activity fell by 3%, and 4,800 people were without jobs, a 12.8% unemployment rate.

Today Duluth will celebrate the discovery of America by Leif Erikson, 500 years before the voyage of Columbus. This afternoon in the Central High School auditorium, Solon J. Buck, superintendent of the Minnesota Historical Society, will be the principal speaker. The 60 acres of cauliflower planted in the rich gardening district north of Duluth should sell for $60,000 this fall.
