DULUTH Chester Park in Duluth was a favorite destination for Shiway and Sadie Barry, the youngest members of a family of four whose lives were tragically taken last year.
Friday afternoon, community members made sure they would always be remembered, at a spot that was so special to the family.
A ceremony dedicating new playground equipment in honor of the Barry daughters was held Friday at the Chester Park playground at 1801 East Skyline Drive.
Family and friends of the Barrys, along with City of Duluth staff, coordinated an effort to raise money to add a new spinner element and accessible swing to the playground, while also converting the fall zone from sand to engineered wood fiber, incorporating an accessible pathway to the playground, and installing a bench in remembrance of the children. According to a press release, additional funding support for the project came from the Parks Capital Fund.
In April 2022, Sean Barry, 47, and Riana Barry, 44, and their daughters Shiway, 12, and Sadie, 9, were killed in a quadruple homicide in Duluth’s East Hillside neighborhood. The assailant, a relative, killed himself at the scene.
