Duluth officials are trying to aid the owners of 42 homes in a triangular piece of land in West Duluth called the “Oneota Isolation Pocket Area,” where traffic noise from Interstate 35 exceeds the state’s standards for nighttime levels. Officials have already decided to use $1.25 million in federal funds to buy out and move 23 of the homeowners. Superior shopkeeper David M. Kaner, 61, was found beaten to death on the floor of Nottingham Cash Market. Police believe the homicide occurred during a robbery of the store on Tower Avenue.

A series of three explosions in the Cromwell area remains unsolved, Sheriff Oscar Juntunen said last night. The explosions occurred just a few days after another “mystery blast” in the region was attributed to an F-86 Sabre jet from the Duluth air base, but at the time of the second series of blasts, no jets were in the area. A 640-mile crude oil pipeline between Superior and Sarnia, Ontario, will be given its final test, Jack L. Bird, division manager for the Lakehead Pipeline Co., said yesterday. Water will be pumped into the line until it fills about 125 miles of the 30-inch pipe.]]>
