Woman injured in Iron Range crash

3 October 2023

DULUTH A woman was hospitalized Tuesday after a single-vehicle crash about 9 miles north of Virginia.

St. Louis County deputies responded to the crash at about 3:45 p.m. at the dead end of Milroy Road, the county Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. They found a vehicle in a wooded area with the driver and only occupant unable to get out due to what authorities called “extensive injuries and damage to the vehicle.”

Virginia firefighters extricated the driver, who was transported by ambulance and then helicopter to Essentia Health in Duluth.

The crash is under investigation, though the Sheriff’s Office said speed is believed to be a contributing factor. The woman’s name is being withheld pending the notification of family members.

“The driver admitted she had not been wearing her seatbelt,” the release said. “Witnesses saw the vehicle driving in the area at a very high rate of speed.”

Virginia Ambulance and the Britt-Pike-Sandy Fire Department assisted at the scene.
