Bygones: Duluth teachers prepared to strike in 1983

Members of the Duluth Federation of Teachers voted unanimously to reject the most recent contract offer of the Duluth School District and also voted to establish a strike preparation committee. Thomas Stroozas, a member of the Superior City Council for 17 years, resigned. Stroozas, who lost his bid for mayor this year, said he is being transferred to Blaine, Minnesota, where he will continue his work with the Soo Line Railroad.

Joan Elizabeth Bohar, 15, was killed in a horseback riding incident yesterday in the Ely lake area. The Eveleth high school senior’s foot caught in a stirrup when she fell from the horse about a half mile south of Hace’s Riding Stable. With six seconds to go and on fourth down, Gordon Soltau place-kicked a 16-yard field goal today to give the San Francisco 49ers a 31-30 upset victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Soltau, a Duluth native, formerly played for the Minnesota Gophers.]]>
