One dead, one injured in two-vehicle crash in Rice Lake

RICE LAKE One man is dead and another is seriously injured after a two-vehicle accident Friday morning north of Duluth.

A news release from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said Paul Larson, 78, of Duluth, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Jason Larson, 42, of Duluth, was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth with serious injuries.

St. Louis County deputies responded to the crash at about 8:44 a.m. Friday at the 3700 block of Martin Road near the intersection of Woodland Avenue in the city of Rice Lake.

According to the release, a minivan was traveling east on Martin Road when it slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder, before making a U-turn to head west. A flatbed truck was also traveling east on Martin Road when it struck the minivan on the driver’s side.

The sheriff’s office said Jason Larson was the driver of the minivan while Paul Larson was a passenger. The driver of the flatbed truck, Ricky Siegle, 47, of Duluth, was not injured.

Assisting the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Rice Lake Fire Department, Duluth Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and Mayo Ambulance.

The crash remains under investigation.
