Gophers women’s hockey opens season with sweep of RIT

8 October 2023

The fourth-ranked Gophers women’s hockey team completed its season-opening series sweep of RIT with a 5-1 victory on Saturday night in Rochester, N.Y.

Minnesota (2-0-0) opened the season on Friday with a 3-0 win over RIT.

The Gophers got goals from five different players on Saturday — Maggie Nicholson, Abbey Murphy, Madison Kaiser, Ava Lindsay and Ella Huber. Lindsay finished with a game-high 14 shots, 10 of which were on goal.

Lucy Morgan secured her first win as a Gophers goaltender, recording 18 saves.

“Really solid win here tonight,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said. “Great for Lucy Morgan to get her first win as a Gopher and Ava Lindsay getting her first goal as a Gopher. We jumped out right away with a quick start and were able to build on that lead. Got a bit tight in the second period, but again, it’s good progression for our group. This was a really good weekend,

Next up for the Gophers is crosstown foe St. Thomas to kick off WCHA play. They meet at 4 p.m. Friday at Xcel Energy Center.
