Vikings rookie Jaren Hall will be backup quarterback with veteran Nick Mullens out

8 October 2023

After being inactive for the first month of his career, rookie Jaren Hall will be the backup quarterback for the Vikings on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium. He was thrust into the role with usual backup quarterback Nick Mullens battling a back injury that kept him out of practice this week.

Though it’s not likely that Hall will see action at any point — Kirk Cousins is among the most durable quarterback in the NFL — it certainly added another layer to the game plan for the Vikings in their matchup with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Asked about Hall this week, head coach Kevin O’Connell praised his development since the Vikings selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

What if Hall has to play for the Vikings against the Chiefs?

“That’s where the other guys in the huddle would need to step up,” O’Connell said. “I view that as a huge responsibility for myself with a young quarterback in there, as well.”

The other inactives for the Vikings included safety Lewis Cine, tight end Nick Muse, pass rusher Andre Carter, offensive tackle Hakeem Adeniji, and defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga.

Notably, center Garrett Bradbury was active for the game, meaning he will play for the first time since suffering a back injury in the Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
