After going through the evaluation process, the Vikings plan to place star receiver Justin Jefferson on injured reserve with hamstring injury. according to multiple reports.
The decision means the 24-year-old Jefferson would have to miss at least the next four games.
The hamstring injury occurred on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium as Jefferson was trying to help the Vikings mount a comeback against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. He slipped while trying to make a cut during a route, pulled up lame, and immediately limped to the sideline. He spent the rest of the game with a towel draped over his head as the Vikings fell to 1-4.
Listening to head coach Kevin O’Connell talk on Monday afternoon at TCO Performance Center, it was pretty clear that Jefferson’s hamstring injury was significant. Though he did not provide an update for how much time Jefferson was going to miss, O’Connell spoke with a rather somber tone, seemingly waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“We’re going to have to medically make a good decision and almost protect him from himself a little bit,” O’Connell said. “We have to take care of him and get him back to 100 percent.”
Now, it appears the Vikings will be without Jefferson for the foreseeable future. He will miss the upcoming road game against the Chicago Bears at Solider Field, a home game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football, a road game against the rival Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, and a road game against the Atlanta Falcons.
