Verlen Kruger, 61, of Lansing, Michigan, and Steve Landick, 30, are exploring North America on a 28,000-mile canoe adventure. They have paddled the length of the east and west coasts and the Mississippi River, and have 1,100 miles of lakes Superior and Michigan to go. Robert Dolzer, 23, of Bemidji, and three friends visiting Duluth put out a house fire at 459 Mesaba Ave. and detained a 49-year-old Duluth man who is believed to have started the blaze.

A pet deer charged a man in Cloquet behind the meat counter of a butcher shop yesterday. The man grabbed the deer’s antlers while his wife broke its backbone with an ax. The deer was known for playfully wrestling with area residents, but the couple was reportedly new to the area and did not know of the deer’s “tricks.” A free dance for Duluth teens will be held at the armory later this month as part of a program to combat juvenile delinquency. A 12-piece orchestra will perform.]]>
