News Tribune, Oct. 12, 1983
As many as 70 Superior city employees could be laid off by the end of the month if their unions won’t voluntarily give up some of the wage increases they’ve just won through arbitration. The City Council ordered Mayor Bruce Hagen to meet with representatives and ask them to give up the increase. Duluth Mayor John Fedo and challenger Shirley Swain will appear in a public forum this week at the Radisson Duluth Hotel, along with four councilor at large candidates: Bill Miller, Arno Kahn, Herb Bergson and Neill Atkins.

Double funeral services will be held this week in Cloquet for a Duluth man who drowned and his father who collapsed and died shortly after his son’s body was returned home. Albert Oak, 43, drowned in Mille Lacs Lake on Sept. 20. His father, Elmer Oak, 74, died of a heart attack as funeral arrangements were being made. A half year devoted to organizing a 2,000-member volunteer army will begin to pay off today as Duluth Community Chest solicitors attempt to raise nearly half a million dollars for 31 local social service agencies.]]>
