2 cats die in Duluth apartment fire

16 October 2023

DULUTH Firefighters were called to a structure fire at the Chester Terrace apartment building, 1232 E. First St., where there were reports of multiple explosions, shortly after midnight Sunday.

Members of the Duluth Fire Department arrived to find light smoke coming from the front and east side of the second floor. They began evacuating that portion of the building and entered the apartment from which the smoke was emanating. Firefighters located a fire in the kitchen and quickly extinguished it. Fire damage was limited to the single unit, but smoke and water damage extended to several surrounding apartments, the department said in a Sunday news release.

No people were injured in the fire but two cats in the unit where the fire began were found dead as a result of smoke inhalation. Firefighters attempted to revive them, but those efforts were not successful.

The reported explosions were attributed to aerosol cans found in the kitchen, according to the fire department. The Duluth Fire Marshal’s office is still working to determine the cause of the fire.

Crews from the downtown, Lakeside, Woodland, UMD, Lincoln Park, Spirit Valley and Miller Hill halls responded, along with the Duluth Police Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service.
