High School Football Roundup: Johnson secures best regular season since 2017, possible home playoff game

19 October 2023

Johnson 26, Minneapolis South 12: Johnson sophomore Justice Moody reeled in a pair of receiving touchdowns to clinch the Governors’ best regular season since 2017.

That was the last time Johnson finished with five regular-season wins until this fall (5-3). Even the 2018 state tournament team went 4-4 in the regular season.

Johnson trailed 12-8 at the break. Leading 19-12 in the final frame, Isaiah Henderson put the game on ice with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.

Johnson’s victory sets the Governors up to potentially nab a home game in the Class 4A, Section 3 quarterfinals.

Eagan 45, Eastview 20: Nick Tesdall accounted for three of Eagan’s five rushing touchdowns on the day. The Wildcats (3-5) led 7-0 after the first, then exploded for 24 second-quarter points.

Ju Ju Stampley had two receiving scores for the Lightning (4-4).

Hill-Murray 56, Como Park 6: Jackson Reeves and Simon Seidl connected for four scoring strikes, all in the first half. The four touchdown passes alone amounted to 104 yards.

Just as impressive was Gavin Berg, who tallied the game’s first two scores – one was an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and the other was a 65-yard fumble return brought to the house.

The Pioneers (6-2) will certainly be the top seed in the Class 4A, Section 3 tournament.

Will Stiles ran in an 8-yard touchdown for Como Park (4-4).

Spring Lake Park 27, Mahtomedi 26, OT: Mahtomedi running back Alec Mahoney hit Will Newman in the end zone in overtime to bring the Zephyrs (4-4) within one, but Mahtomedi’s ensuing, potential game-winning two-point attempt was stopped.

The pass was the third touchdown Mahoney accounted for on Wednesday, as he ran in two other scores.

The game was tied 14-14 in the fourth before both teams scored in the final three minutes of regulation – with Spring Lake Park’s Matthew Buren running in his second score of the game with 2 minutes, 48 seconds to play. But the Panthers missed the extra point.

Then Zephyrs quarterback Charlie Brandt knotted the score with a 3-yard run with six seconds to play. But Mahtomedi, too, missed its extra point.

Lamari Brown ran in a score from seven yards out for Spring Lake Park (6-2) in the extra session.

There is a bit of mystery now when it comes to who will be the top seed in the Class 5A, Section 4 tournament. Mahtomedi easily toppled Central in Week 2, but Central may now finish ahead of the Zephyrs in the Class 5A Quality Rating Formula put together by Minnesota Scores.

St. Agnes 48, Academy Force 22: Landen Mickelson accounted for four touchdowns – throwing for three and rushing in another – as the Aggies (8-0) completed a perfect regular season.

Two of those passing touchdowns went to Dan Plamann for gains of 65 and 40 yards.
