Bygones: Crews broke ground on West Duluth shopping center in 1983

The city of Gilbert is considering shipping 1,000 water meters back to the firm that sold them after it was discovered that bids had not been allowed on the transaction. The City Council voted to reopen bidding on the sale of meters to the city. Groundbreaking is slated for a new shopping plaza in West Duluth today. Mayor John Fedo said that the development is one of his accomplishments as mayor, despite criticism that the project still lacks complete financial agreements.

Duluth’s poundmaster, along with several area residents, unsuccessfully attempted to catch a bear cub that had climbed a tree at a home on Vermilion Road. They had decided to catch and release the cub instead of shooting it, as it was doing no harm. The bear escaped into the woods. A 60-year-old Duluth woman and a 21-year-old Canadian woman were hospitalized after a crash at 55th Avenue West and Cody Street. Both women were passengers in cars driven by their husbands.]]>
