DULUTH On a sunny late-December afternoon with temperatures in the 40s, the Wilfred Sykes traveled under the Aerial Lift Bridge onto Lake Superior.
The laker departed the Port of Duluth-Superior just before 2:45 p.m. Thursday.
The Wilfred Sykes was built in 1949 by the American Shipbuilding Co. in Lorain, Ohio. In 1975, it was converted to a self-unloader at Fraser Shipyards in Superior.
According to the website MarineTraffic, the Wilfred Sykes is headed to Indiana Harbor, Indiana, on Lake Michigan, with an estimated arrival of around 11 a.m. Sunday.
