Duluth experienced its coldest New Year’s Day on record, with the mercury plummeting to -35 degrees, beating the 1885 record of 26 below.

Rodney Steven Reitan checked in at St. Mary’s hospital at 2:41 a.m. yesterday, claiming the honor of being Duluth’s first baby of 1954. Rodney’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Martin Reitan.

A Duluth police officer was injured in an altercation when another officer asked a man to take his drink back into Curly’s Bar in the West End. The officer was treated and released from St. Luke’s, and four people were arrested.
