St. Paul fire: Woman, 6 children pulled from smoky home and taken to hospital in critical condition

3 January 2024

Firefighters pulled six children and a woman from a St. Paul home Wednesday morning and they were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The fire department was called at 1:30 a.m. about a residential house fire in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood and found a single-family home with smoke showing, said Deputy Fire Chief Tony Farina.

Firefighters discovered seven people inside the house on Arkwright Street near Maryland Avenue and they were transported by ambulances to Regions Hospital.

The children are believed to be under the age of seven, Farina said.

Firefighters were notified by a female who reported the house was on fire, and then there was an open phone line and a dispatcher could only hear an alarm, according to an emergency radio dispatch.

The fire and police departments are investigating. Additional information wasn’t immediately available early Wednesday.
