Shakopee student athlete dies three weeks after motor vehicle crash

A Shakopee High School student athlete has died following a motor vehicle crash on the day after Christmas.

Mikayla McCarvel, 18, was involved in a crash that occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Dec. 26 at Scott County Road 21 and Tintaocanku, northeast of the Mystic Lake casino.

She suffered severe injuries and died Tuesday.

Shakopee police are waiting for a reconstruction report from the State Patrol before additional details about the crash are released.

Dan McCarvel, Mikayla’s father, announced the death of his daughter on her CaringBridge webpage. He also said that her organs had been donated.

“Mikayla’s life was one filled with endless adventure. It was hard to keep up with all the things she wanted to do next,” McCarvel wrote. “She was never one to shy away from something new for fear of failure or embarrassment. To best honor her — go try something new … find that new adventure.”

Mikayla played both hockey and soccer. During a recent hockey game between Shakopee and Prior Lake, students knelt in prayer at center ice in support of Mikayla.

The Shakopee school district said it has offered counseling services to students, families and staff.
