Body of one missing Boundary Waters canoeist recovered

31 May 2024

ELY — One of two canoeists who went missing two weeks ago in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has been found dead.

On Friday, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and St. Louis County Rescue Squad recovered the body of Jesse Haugen, 41, of Cambridge, Minnesota near Curtain Falls in the BWCA.

Haugen was one of four canoeists who went over the falls near the U.S.-Canada border on May 18. Reis Grams, 40, of Lino Lakes is still missing, while one person was taken to Essentia-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth with serious injuries and two others in the group were uninjured.

Crews are still searching for Grams, though efforts have been hampered by numerous stretches of bad weather and high water. Personnel are using inflatable boats, canoes, drones, K-9’s and other methods in and around the area.
