DULUTH — Seeing the ships arrive and depart is a fun pastime for Northlanders and for those that glanced at the Duluth harbor this week, there were multiple occasions where large vessels passed by each other.

Two Canadian lakers traveled in opposite directions Thursday morning as Manitoulin arrived while Saginaw made her way toward the Aerial Lift Bridge. According to the website MarineTraffic.com, Saginaw is expected to reach Sault Ste Marie, Michigan early Saturday morning.

Also on Thursday, the Walter J. McCarthy Jr., a laker built in 1977 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, departed the Port of Duluth-Superior while Gardno, a saltie that sails under the flag of the Bahamas, arrived. The Walter J. McCarthy Jr. is expected to reach the St. Clair Port near Lake Erie Saturday evening, according to MarineTraffic.
