Austin Utilities issues peak alert, APS cancels sporting events

Austin Utilities has issued a peak alert for today through 8 p.m. and asking that customers reduce energy usage due to the high temperatures expected today. Dairyland Power Cooperative has also issued a peak alert.

At the same time, Austin Public Schools has canceled all sporting events.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to get up to around 93 degrees today, with heat index values up to 110 degrees. The NWS will be placing the area into a extreme heat warning from 1-8 p.m. tonight.

People are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air-conditioned room. People should also stay out of the sun and don’t leave young children or pets unintended in vehicles.
