AITKIN — A 20-year-old St. Paul man died Saturday, Aug. 24, after his canoe capsized on Wolf Lake in Aitkin County.
The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident around 9 p.m. in Savanna Portage State Park in Balsam Township, north of McGregor. According to the report, a man was camping with family when he and a cousin took the canoe out on the lake.
The caller advised that the canoe they were in had capsized and sent both of them into the water. The parties attempted to swim back to shore, but the cousin began to panic, went under the water and had not resurfaced.
Arriving within 20 minutes, multiple agencies were dispatched to the location and began searching for the man.
The victim, Htoo Shwe, was located at the bottom of the lake and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the cause of death to be freshwater drowning.
Assisting at the scene were Aitkin County Search and Rescue, the McGregor Fire Department, McGregor First Responders and McGregor Ambulance.
