After storm damage assessment and cleanup, MN State Fair opens late Tuesday

27 August 2024

ST. PAUL — The Minnesota State Fair was set to open at 9 a.m. Tuesday, two hours late, in the aftermath of a round of severe weather overnight, Fair officials announced.

Earlier Tuesday, Aug. 27, officials told the public the Fairgrounds were “closed until further notice for damage assessment and debris cleanup.” At 8:40 a.m., the Fair issued an update that on-site parking lots had opened and visitors would be let in starting at 9, but some vendors and attractions may delay their openings even further.

Park & Ride resumed service at 9:15 a.m., along with State Fair Express and other bus services, Fair officials said in a 9:20 update.

Additional announcements will be posted to the Fair’s updates page at mnstatefair.org/updates/.

The Twin Cities was hit by a round of severe weather starting on Monday evening, continuing overnight into Tuesday.

While the potential remains for rain and more thunderstorms on Tuesday morning, the Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service reports that more severe weather is not expected.

The storms descended soon after the 2024 Minnesota State Fair smashed attendance records during a busy start to the Great Minnesota Get-Together, which started on Thursday and runs through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2.
