Lake Elmo residents asked to help name new city park

27 August 2024

City officials in Lake Elmo are seeking the public’s input on naming a new city park.

Nearly 30 acres of new park land on the southeast shore of Sunfish Lake was acquired by the city as part of the park-dedication process in connection with the new 200-home Legacy at Northstar housing development near the intersection of Stillwater Boulevard and Lake Elmo Avenue.

The park, which is expected to open in 2025, will contain nature walking trails throughout the area for passive recreation, said City Administrator Nicole Miller. The park also is designed to preserve the natural shoreland features, wildlife habitat and wooded bluffs around the southeast side of Sunfish Lake.

The large Northstar barn, part of the former Schiltgen Farms, which has served as a gateway to Lake Elmo since 1910, will remain as an amenity for those in the new development and help maintain the city’s rural charm, said City Administrator Nicole Miller.

In June, city officials celebrated the grand opening of Elmo’s Pup Park, the city’s new dog park, which is located on 10 acres south of Lake Jane at 4259 Jamaca Ave. N.

Park name proposals for the city’s newest park can be submitted through the city’s website; the city’s park-naming policy also can be found there.
