Bygones: Fighting crew prompted Lake Superior ship to turn around in 1954

One hundred thirty divorces were granted by courts in Superior between Oct. 1, 1923, and Oct. 1, 1924, as compared with 188 marriage licenses granted during the same time period. Cruel and inhuman treatment was given as grounds for the majority of the divorces.

The freighter E.C. Collins returned to the Duluth-Superior harbor an hour after departing due to two cooks getting into a fight with a meat cleaver. One cook was treated for a nose injury at St. Mary’s Hospital, while the other was put on a bus to Eau Claire, where he lives.
