Photos and video: Bentleyville’s big tree is getting a makeover

5 October 2024

DULUTH — Snow isn’t quite in the forecast yet for the Northland and Halloween hasn’t even happened, but the Christmas spirit was in the air at Bayfront Festival Park Saturday morning as Bentleyville’s 128-foot tree was set up. At the same time, thousands of lights were stripped from the iconic structure.

2024 is the 21st year of Bentleyville and the 15th anniversary of the tree. To mark the milestone, the tree is being totally renovated. Approximately 150,000 LED lights were removed from the tree. In their place will be new RBG technology lighting, using the colors of red, green and blue to create millions of different colors. Organizers expect that the new lights will take about three to four weeks to fully install.

Saturday’s installation benefited from donated services and time from Iron Workers Local 512, Barnhart, Sunbelt Rentals, Halvor Lines Trucking, Jamar, Red Cedar Steel and Lift Pro.

If you’d like to participate in Bentleyville’s setup, volunteers are needed each Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday evenings from 5-8 p.m.

Opening day for the 2024 Bentleyville season is planned for Saturday, Nov. 23. The season will wrap up Saturday, Dec. 28. Hours will be 5-9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The walk-through light show is free to attend, while parking will be $10 per vehicle.
