Northland stories told through video in 2023

31 December 2023

DULUTH As we look ahead to 2024, the News Tribune reflects on some moments that captivated the Northland in 2023. Digital producers Wyatt Buckner and Dan Williamson assembled more than 200 videos during the year. While piecing together just some of them into an overview video, they each had a chance to reflect on their favorite videos they produced in 2023.

Wyatt Buckner’s favorite video Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon starting line

Buckner is no stranger to covering the Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, with his first race coverage taking place during the polar vortex of 2019. However, this was his first time covering the marathon for the Duluth News Tribune.

Though he produced multiple videos throughout the race at checkpoints and the finish line, it was the starting line where he had the chance to highlight a particular sled dog who had recovered from a snowmobile accident a year before the race. In a race with hundreds of dogs, he was excited to focus on one dog’s story.

Dan Williamson’s favorite video Mason Branstrator’s desire to inspire

Following the theme of recovery, Williamson helped tell Mason Branstrator’s story of receiving a spinal cord injury after a skiing accident in January 2021. Through his recovery journey, he’s been able to reach and inspire others through social media.

According to Williamson, “Just meeting this young man and hearing his story. Despite his situation, his positive outlook on life and his desire to help others is truly inspiring. It was an honor to play a part in sharing his story.”
