St. Paul animal torture charge: 19-year-old accused of killing family’s cat by putting it in oven

A 19-year-old is charged with torturing his family’s cat by putting it in the oven in their St. Paul apartment. He “cooked it to death,” his mother reported when she called 911.

Officers responded to the Payne-Phalen area on Saturday evening. They found the 19-year-old pacing around the room and appearing in distress, according to a felony criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court Monday.

The young man told police he’d been on the light rail and must have gotten high from the other people smoking fentanyl on the train, the complaint said.

His mother reported she put a pizza in the oven for dinner and sat in the back of the residence while it cooked. She heard her fire alarm going off and ran to the oven. She opened the oven door and saw the family pet inside. Her son, who was standing next to the oven, said, “I did it,” the complaint continued.

Police found the dead cat in the oven, which was turned off before they arrived. St. Paul Animal Control then took custody of the cat’s body. The University of Minnesota is to complete a necropsy report.
