Duluth police officer George Lane has been suspended after allegedly assaulting City Prosecutor Harry E. Weinberg over the $3,000 settlement of an action brought against the officer for clubbing another man over the head, causing hearing loss.

The Duluth Board of Education sold $3 million worth of building bonds and passed a record $5,786,468 budget for the 1954-55 school year. Increased enrollments, expected to top the 19,000 mark this year, are held chiefly responsible for the high budget figure.

Hours before a federal bankruptcy judge ruled that Tony Wise doesn’t own the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race, Wise refunded registration fees to 800 skiers, asking them to instead participate in a rival race he has scheduled for the same date. Wise, who created the Birkie, said no one else is capable of running a quality race.
