Caple, who is best known nationally for his work on ESPN.com from 2001-17, covered the Twins and Major League Baseball for the Pioneer Press from 1989-2000.

Over the course of his nearly four decade career, Caple covered 20 World Series and six Olympic Games, and he was a prominent columnist for years on ESPN’s Page 2 website. He also wrote several books, including “The Devil Wears Pinstripes,” an offbeat look at the New York Yankees dynasty.

Caple’s family, in social media posts, said he had been stricken with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and dementia.
