High school football: Week 8 predictions

17 October 2023

Here are some of the top high school football games involving East Metro teams over the next two days:

WEDNESDAY

Eagan (2-5) at Eastview (4-3), 4:30 p.m.

A rivalry game that is likely to go a long way toward determining the level of success of the season for each of these two programs. For Eastview, it is a chance to show the Lightning are in Eagan’s weight class. For the Wildcats, it’s a chance to re-establish momentum heading into the postseason. OUR PICK: Eagan 24, Eastview 16

Central (5-2) at Highland Park (3-4), 5 p.m.

The rivalry reigns supreme as the most important thing at stake in this one, but the game also holds postseason implications, with the Minutemen and Scots battling for seeds that bring home games and byes. Central will look to respond to its loss to Two Rivers by re-asserting its running game. OUR PICK: Central 20, Highland Park 10

Simley (5-2) at Two Rivers (6-1), 7 p.m.

An excellent tuneup for both teams heading into the playoffs, as they are arguably each the best team one another has faced to date. Two Rivers could use a competitive game to prep itself for similar matchups to come in sections, while Simley has to prove it can put up points against a tough defense. OUR PICK: Two Rivers 20, Simley 14

Mahtomedi (4-3) at Spring Lake Park (3-4), 7 p.m.

These are two high-end programs experiencing a few more regular-season speed bumps than they’re accustomed to enduring. But the winner can enter the postseason believing it has found its footing and is on the right track at the right time of year. OUR PICK: Mahtomedi 28, Spring Lake Park 22

THURSDAY

Rosemount (4-3) at Centennial (6-1), 7 p.m.

Two teams that could very well meet again in a state quarterfinal do a dance to close the regular season. Centennial’s running game has feasted all season, but how will it fair against a stout South Suburban Conference defense? OUR PICK: Centennial 21, Rosemount 20
